We have been learning to solve problems that involve going up and over ten using tens frames.
For example: 9+7= ?

This is how we solved it:
(9+1) + 6
10 + 6 = 16

Now we would like you to try one:
6+9 = ?

Hope you can do this as well as we can!

Week 8 Maths News

This week we have been busy exploring a variety of strategies to solve addition and subtraction and on Friday we had an assessment to see how we are going.
We thought we would share how some of the class are solving problems.

Nate had to show how he could add up a big row of numbers quickly by making tens.

Leyi shows here how she can solve 8+7= in 2 different  ways.
Also she shows how she solves 6+9 and 16+9 =

Caleb also showed his thinking for the 2 problems above and he did it clearly.

Meg shows how she did the above problems as well as 7+9 and 57+9=

We hope these are not too dark to see and Mrs. Tyson will learn how to make her photos brighter!

Room 5 Basic Facts News

We are learning basic facts every day in the tasks we do in class and there are two times when we set aside time for Basic Facts Practice.
1. IXL - we are all up and running now and everyone has been on at school. Also a lot of our class have been doing extra at home.
On Friday the class received a certificate to say we have done 1000 basic facts so far. Tino pai team!

2. Every Friday we have Taranaki Sprints and we estimate each time how many facts out of 100 will will get right in 6 minutes. We started with everyone on addition but already we have 6 people on subtraction facts at speed and next week we have one person who will start multiplication facts. We graph our results each week so feel free to come in and see how well we are doing. By now everyone will have sheet to take home as well so that they can practice at home as well in their pare time.

Week 7 Marvelous Maths in Rm 5

Kia ora koutou
This week we have been very busy on our addition and subtraction strategies. We are set problems to solve and then we go away to solve them and have to be prepared when we come back to the class to show how our maths works with materials. We have been doing problems that include two digit numbers and have had some amazing strategies shared with the group. Also we tested our basic facts at speed and nearly everyone in the room has improved from last week. Ka pai everyone.
Here is how Sophie solved one of her maths problems this week and how she showed the class what she was thinking with materials.
Sophie's problem involved 54+45 = and you can see below how she started and made her 2 numbers. After this picture she joined all the tens together and then the ones and got 99!

Kia ora from Mrs. Tyson and Mrs Yates and the Room 5 Numeracy Class in Week 3.

This week we all changed rooms and moved to our Maths Interchange Class for 2013.
This will be for week 3 and then from week 6 onwards for the rest of the year.
During weeks 4 & 5 the classes will be at camp.
Our class is learning how our brain works and how this will help us learn in Maths.
One way of opening the filters in our brain ready for learning, is to start the day with a Provocative Statement'. You can see today's statement and what we came up with below.
Also, Sophie  decided, after one day in the class, that she would create ways to solve a number at home. We have included her page as well.
We are all starting on addition and subtraction and we are practising all our basic facts at speed.
